Hunt out the bargain
Even with a budget of £100m it's still a real squeeze getting an 11-man line-up that hasn't broken the bank. The key is to find a bargain-basement player who will rack up the points. Last season, for instance, Blackburn's Andy Todd and Everton veteran David Weir reached three figures in defence despite the fact that it cost little or nothing to acquire their services in your squad. Charlton centre-back Talal El Karkouri did even better as he grabbed high points and valued at low cost. Midfielders can also be a source of cheap points. Chelsea's Joe Cole notched up high points and Everton's Tim Cahill proved great value at £2.5m. The values of these players have since increased due to their performances in the previous season however every new season brings a new Andy Todd or a new Joe Cole.
Size isn't everything - bigger doesn't always mean better
The bigger clubs tend to have squad rotation systems that cause a negative effect on potential scores. This is particularly the case with strikers who are often rested for less important games (where in theory they should find it easier to score).
Attack from the back
Defenders who score goals are worth their weight in gold. In the 2005/2006 premiership season, Middlesborough's Franck Queudrue, Radhi Jaidi of Bolton and Charlton's Talal El Karkouri scored five goals each, boosting the points of the Fantasy Football Managers who have selected them.
A defender who regularly takes free-kicks or penalties is a real asset - get him in your team.
Don't see red! Avoid the bad boys
Last season our very own Mikel Obi was really naughty and although he has got great skills and die hard Nigerian Chesea fans loved to see him week in week out, selecting him as part of your team was detrimental to your accumulation of points as he seemed to be sent off in just about every major game he came in for Chelsea at the beginning of his career there.
Players are deducted points each time they are booked. And a red card earns Fantasy Football Manager more point deductions. So steer clear of cloggers - or you may pay the price.
Tired or Injured playersEnsure you make the changes to your team early in the week and submit the new and revised team selection on or before 24hrs before a live game on Saturday week.
